Ken Robert Lozoway
A Short Encapsulated History
Ken grew up in the small rural community of Vegreville, Alberta, spending summers on his grandparents farm throughout most of his adolescents. A keen interest in nature was developed at an early age accompanying his father on wildlife viewing and hunting outings. His Fathers Taxidermy Business provided intimate knowledge of a wide variety of birds, small and large mammals.
Beginning with a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye camera at the age of 13, he began using his Fathers German Super Paxette 35mm SLR Range Finder and later a Pentax Spotomatic 35mm SLR camera. The cameras provided his initial introduction to photography. Since those inauspicious beginnings, the camera equipment has changed and so did his knowledge and skills as a photographer. Mostly self taught and learning from trial and error, Ken soon realized that his interest in nature photography was becoming a passion. Knowledge and skills initially grew through friendships formed with other amateur photographers.
Prior to graduation he spent summers working with Dr. Patterson, Canadian Wildlife Service. DR. Patterson's research project focused on the impact of agricultural herbicides on aquatic ecosystems. Following graduation from the University of Alberta with an Honours B.Sc. in Zoology, he moved to Vancouver Island, British Columbia to continue studies in Marine Biology, Marine Ecology and Oceanography at the University of Victoria. Personal and professional interests in Ecology, Environmental Conservation and Habitat protection converged, and led to a career as a Professional Biologist with the BC Ministry of Environment. He holds accreditation with the Registered Professional Biologists of BC (RPBIO) since 1993.
In 1980 he met Mike Gluss and Kris Khan, two Principals behind the inception of the Western Pacific Academy of Photography. As the friendship grew Ken was offered the opportunity to join the trade school venture as an Associate. Between 1981-1984 exposure to several incredibly interesting and highly skilled Professional Photographers provided invaluable opportunities to further expand his knowledge and skills. Most notable were individual mentors including Yorne Svendson, Ted Grant, Cole Weston, Sherman Hines, Courtney Milne and Freeman Patterson. He has also held accreditation with Professional Photographers of Canada and The Association of Professional Photographers of BC.
In 1994 Ken received accreditation for a photojournalism project at the XV Commonwealth Games held in Victoria, BC. This proved to be one of the highlights, most memorable and rewarding events in his photographic career. The project was supported by Kodak Canada and the Royal Bank, resulting in a black and white photo-essay featuring elite physically challenged athletes from Commonwealth Countries around the world . This event was also a watershed moment for these athletes, because their events ran consecutively with the able bodies athletes. It was also the year that Nelson Mandela was released from a South African Prison.
Ken continues to strive towards raising public awareness of the importance of wildlife conservation and habitat protection through his photography. His philosophy includes creating wildlife encounters that minimize the disturbance to his subjects, capturing images that literally tell a story about life cycle behaviours. Achieving this goal has proven difficult at times, however applying his knowledge of biology, ecology, wildlife behaviour and photography has resulted in images of birds and mammals doing what they do naturally. Capturing these unique images of wildlife in their natural habitats has provided the basis for making presentations to school aged youth, in conjunction with the Wild Arc, a wildlife rehabilitation centre (branch of the BCSPCA) located in the district of Metchosin on Vancouver Island, as well as adult community groups.
Ken's images have also been published in a variety of specialty books, brochures, scientific reports and newsletters. His Fine Art prints have also generated interest from a number of corporate and private clients.
